Icom IC-M87 ATEX Intrinsically Safe Marine Radio

The Icom IC-M87 ATEX is a professional intrinsically safe VHF marine two-way radio developed for communication in potentially explosive environments. Unlike conventional marine walkie talkies, the ATEX version is specifically certified for hazardous areas where flammable gases or vapors may be present.

Icom specifies an ATEX approval rating of II 2G Ex ib IIA T3 Gb, making the IC-M87 ATEX suitable for certain hazardous-area applications such as petroleum tankers and bulk cargo carriers. The radio must be used with the approved BP-227AX battery and according to Icom’s specified conditions for safe use.

The radio combines marine VHF communication with programmable PMR/land-mobile channels from 146–174 MHz, allowing crews to use the same handheld for shipboard and selected land-mobile communication requirements. The ATEX version provides 22 programmable PMR channels with CTCSS and DTCS signaling. Appropriate licensing is required for PMR operation.

The biggest advantage of the Icom IC-M87 ATEX is its intrinsically safe construction. Icom specifies the certification as II 2G Ex ib IIA T3 Gb, covering specified hazardous gas, vapor and mist environments.

This makes the radio particularly relevant for industries where conventional communication equipment may not be suitable.

Important: ATEX equipment must be used exactly according to its certification and manufacturer’s safety conditions. The IC-M87 ATEX must use the specified BP-227AX battery, and the battery must only be charged in a non-hazardous area.
